If you are thinking of running away from home…
If you need someone to talk to…

Don't run away, go to a safe place!

1. What is a Safe Place?

Safe Place is a program that is there for kids.

2. How does Safe Place work?

All you have to do is walk into a Safe Place and ask the people who work there for help. They will call a Safe Place volunteer to come talk with you.

3. Where can you find a Safe Place?

A safe place is any building that has this sign on it (logo)
You will find them on fire stations, Block Buster Video Stores, Home Depot Stores, Rec Centers, Domino Pizza Stores, YMCA'S and many other places. Look for the Safe Place Signs in you neighborhood.

4. Why do kids go to Safe Places?

They need to talk to someone that wants to listen, help and understand.
They feel lonely or scared.
They live in an unsafe home.
They are being abused.
They have parents or family members with drug and alcohol problems.
They are arguing with family members and need "cooling off time".
They are thinking about running away from home but know that is not a safe thing to do.
They need help communicating with their parents or others.
They have no place to go.
They need time to think about what's going on in their lives.
They are in a bad situation.

5. How much does it cost?

Not a thing.

6. How old do you have to be to use a Safe Place?

Kids ages 10-17 should go there if they need help.

7. What if you cannot get to a Safe Place?

You can call 1-800-runaway, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you call this number, telephone counselors will help you get in touch with the shelter or someone else that can help you.

8. What happens when you leave a Safe Place?

A volunteer will meet you at the Safe Place and help you decide what you want to do next. If you decide to go to a shelter, our shelter staff will help you..
Work through your problems with a counselor
Cool down from arguments
Make decisions that are good for you and your family
Communicate better with your parents
Get the support you need
We also give kids food, clothing and a place to stay if necessary

9. Do the people who work at the shelter call your parents?

The law says that at some point, we have to call parents to let them know that you are O.K. We also, by law, have to report to the department of Children and Families when a youth is being abused.
